Sonya’s Blog - Day 336 - May 23rd - Whistler

Today we are going to Whistler. The weather is still very cloudy, with a chance of rain, but that is pretty normal for Vancouver. At least it wasn’t raining already, so we will take our chances.

We drove off towards the Sea to Sky Highway to begin our ascent. It was a pretty drive and you get some great snatches of the ocean as you are driving up into the mountains. It is a 90 minute drive, but it took us 2 hours as we had to stop for gas and sustenance at Tim Horton’s. Due to the fact that it is Victoria Day, the Tim’s was pretty busy. It wasn’t busy on the highway heading up to Whistler, but on the highway returning to Vancouver.

We were going to check out the Whistler Olympic Village, but it was closed for the season. Our first stop was Creekside, because it looked like a quaint little village. The Gondola is closed down for the season from Creekside and only a few of the shops were open, but it was nice to walk around. We did manage to get a picture at the medal podium:

We then drove over to Whistler Village, which is much larger. We walked around there to check it out. We looked at the Gondola, but the mountain was covered in clouds a little way up and we thought we wouldn’t be able to see anything from up there. There were lots of cyclists getting on the gondola and working their way down the mountain, it was quite busy with all of them. The village was also very busy, tons of people walking around the area, checking things out. We had our packed lunch, looked in some of the shops and then decided it was time to drive back.

It took us about 2 hours to get back to our campground, there was heavy traffic and some pretty good traffic back-ups in the areas where we were reduced to single lanes. It allowed us to enjoy the views from those areas, so it wasn’t too bad. We stopped in at the grocery store to get some supper items, because Lise was coming over for supper.

We got home and started on supper right away. Lise arrived about a 1/2 hour later and everything was one and almost ready to go. We visited for a bit, had some supper and then visited some more. We had a great night and spent chatted until we realized how late it was. We said our final good-byes to Lise and we hope she makes some time to come and visit us in Calgary in the near future.

We are still using our Christmas table cloth, but this will be the last time. It is kind of wrecked, time to get a new one:
