Sonya’s Blog - Day 314 - May 1st - Crescent Beach

When Blake and I took Kizmet for a walk this morning, we saw some critters. First we saw a Banana Slug:

It was pretty gross and left a nice slimy trail behind it. We then saw a snake, not sure what kind of snake this is:

I am not sure if it fell out of the tree and was stunned, or if it was half dead. All I know is that Kizmet and I almost stepped on it and it didn’t budge, so not feeling great.

Blake went and reported the theft of our bike to the office (it was closed yesterday, when we discovered the cut bike lock). They called the Sheriff’s Office. The guy saw someone riding a bike out of the campground, pretty hard yesterday. I guess that explains why only one bike was stolen, it was ridden out. A deputy came by and took Blake’s statement and the serial number of the bike, and that is really all we can do.

We need to go into Crescent City to buy new bike locks, so we will visit the beach while we are there. We locked everything up tight before we left and put the bikes back in the RV. We have to take them out, in order to use the kitchen.

Crescent Beach is a rocky beach, so it is fun to explore. There are lots of tide pools with little critters living in them. These are my favourite types of beaches for exploring, as there is just so much more to see. Sandy beaches are beautiful, but they are not as much fun to explore, in my opinion. We had fun looking in the tide pools, there were lots of tiny crabs scuttling around and other creatures.

We then headed to Walmart for our new bike locks. They only had one U-Bolt, but they had some heavy duty chains, so we bought two of those and the U-Bolt. I guess these will be harder to cut through. The fact is, we have had no problems up until now with our cheapy doo locks. We have had the bikes on the back of the RV and have forgotten to lock them up, in some places, so we have been pretty lucky so far. Still, if we ever came down this way again we would never camp in this city or this campground again. It is just down the street from the new jail, which I didn’t know when I booked the campground. The neighbour said, the jail is great for jobs, but it has brought a lot of unsavoury characters to town. Live and learn.

We got back to camp and set up outside, because it was such a beautiful day. Blake started a fire, when the sun started to dip down and we had a lovely night outside until the mosquitoes became unbearable.
