A Mardi Gras Parade

Our second full day in the Big Easy and, once again it was quite uneventful with one exception. Today, we went to our first ever Mardi Gras parade. I know, I know, it’s pretty cool. So, like I did yesterday, I whiled away the daylight hours doing so much homework it made my brain feel a little bit squishy. At around 5:00pm, we set out in search for parking close to the parade route. We parked about ten blocks away from the street where we needed to be, so we only set up camp about ten minutes before the start of the parade. There were two parades, one right after

the other. The first parade was around 17 vibrant floats long, and they threw mostly beads along with other small things, such as glow sticks, flashing light sabre looking items and a lot of cups with the logo of the Druids on it. The Krewe of Druids were the ones putting on the first parade. After a small break, the second parade started, this one done by the

Krewe of Nyx. This year was Nyx’s fifth anniversary so all of their forty or so floats had a theme that involved the number five. My favourite floats were the Jackson 5 one and the Maroon 5 one, because nice. We got even more plastic from this second parade. They were also throwing out handmade purses and it was my goal to get one. It took me a really long time though, and I definitely thought I wasn’t going to get one. Mum got a nice blue one with peacock feathers and a couple floats later, they stopped because of a traffic jam and Dad asked one of the ladies on board if he could get a purse for me. I got a hard-shelled clutch, black with pink highlights and it’s very cute. The parade ended at around 9:30, so we packed up our chairs and walked the 2kms back to the truck. And thus ends my first Mardi Gras experience. Peace out m8s.
