Sonya’s Blog - Day 163 - December 2nd - Traveling to Wilmington, NC
We had a slow start this morning, but we finally got all packed up and on the road by 11. If we only stop once, then we should make it to our campground before it gets dark.
We mapped out the route in our new road atlas as we just don’t trust the GPS anymore. We have it all worked out, so it shouldn’t be a stressful trip. As long as we watch the road signs carefully we will be okay.
The drive is pretty boring, not much to see. We did see fields and fields of cotton that doesn’t look like it has been harvested yet. Here is a picture:
The only other thing we have seen plenty of is swamps, lots and lots of swamps as soon as we crossed the border into North Carolina.
We got all set up and then started reading the information about Wilmington. We had perfect timing today, as soon as we were all set up and starting on supper, the rain started. It is nice to not have to set up in the rain!
There is quite a bit to do here, so that is good. Wilmington is an historic town, it was important in the steamship era and was the largest city in the Carolina’s during that time. It was also an important port during the Civil War for the Confederates. Wilmington was built on the Cape Fear River and is situated between the river and the Atlantic Ocean. There are also the Brunswick Islands, so there is lots of Island exploring to do as well. We can take a kayaking adventure among the islands and into the marshy areas to try and spot alligators. That would be terrifying, but exciting.
Blake has to get to bed early, he has a cold and a nasty cough. We will probably just have a sleep in day tomorrow and take it easy in the morning. Then we will go in and explore the Historic District in Wilmington and walk the Boardwalk along the Cape Fear River.
