Count Carl Von (C)Donop
Most of this morning was spent inside doing non-exciting things, to I’ll skip to the part where we headed out to National Park, yes, it’s called National Park, after lunch. As it turned out, the website Mum had read about the park had lied, and there weren’t any pets aloud, so we had to leave Kizzy in the car. We walked around the bigger park area first and I climbed into a really weird looking tree. Then we headed down to the riverfront because we were going to walk along there instead, but it ended up being really windy and cold, so we scrapped that idea. Instead we walked along the path to the highlight of the park. National Park is set around the
Battle of Red Bank, where an army of 2000 German Hessians tried to attack a group of 400 American soldiers during the Revolutionary War. Because they were well fortified at Fort Mercer and well prepared, the American soldiers ended up winning. The loss for the Hessians was over 600 men, 27 officers and the commander, Carl von Donop. At the same time as the attack on the fort, multiple British war ships were battling with smaller American gun boats. Two of the British ships, the Merlin and the Augusta, ran
aground when they hit the underwater stockades the Americans had put into the water to impale enemy ships’s hulls. Both ships were set on fire and the Augusta exploded the following day. There was also a monument to Colonel Christopher Green, who was credited with the success of the Americans in the Battle of Red Bank and then later killed brutally, mutilated probably for his associations with the 1st Rhode Island Regiment, or the Black Regiment. It was interesting to learn about. After that, we headed back to the trailer with Kizzy and Dad, Isaac and I played a game of DONKEY with a twist. After our dinner of scrumptious chilli, we played a game of Apples to Apples in which I won fabulously. Then we began our nightly tradition of watching Corner Gas. Peace out m8s.
