Sonya’s Blog - Day 131 - October 31st - Simon’s 2nd Birthday

My little cutie-pie nephew was born on Halloween two years ago! Today is his birthday and it is going to be a fun-filled day.

Blake is not feeling well, but he managed to drag himself out of bed and take off to Costco. Natasha and Adam went with him. Adam wanted to go to get food for Simon’s Birthday Party this afternoon and Natasha still needed a blue tie for her Castiel costume. Who is Castiel, you may ask? Well he is the Angel of the Lord in Supernatural the TV show. Not sure how many people are going to “get” that she is dressed up, but Tash does not care.

Isaac and I went with Suzanne and her kids to Chatam University (which is about 1/2 a block away) because they were having a trick or treating festival for the local kids. It was a fun affair run by the university students. They had lots of different stations set up where the kids could do something and also get a treat for their bags. They had face painting, a balloon guy, some craft table, some game tables, a couple of bouncy houses and food. This was all complimentary to whoever showed up, which was nice. There were a lot of little kids, so Isaac felt a bit big and his costume is hard to maneuver in. He still did some of the activities and got some treats and it was a lovely day to be outside. Unfortunately, Blake took my phone with him so I could not snap any pictures. The kids all had fun. I took Kizmet with me (Bowser had to stay home because he barks too much at strangers) and she was a big hit. She was a little nervous though and kids kept popping their balloon animals near her, which she really does not like. She was really good though.

We got back to the house and it was time to get ready for Simon’s party. I put Simon down for a nap because Suz was too busy getting the food and decorations ready. I had cleaned up the upstairs toy room earlier, so we just had to tidy up downstairs and set up the rest of the games. Natasha helped Suzanne in the kitchen and I assigned Isaac to sweep. Well, Isaac is a terrible sweeper because Adam took over from him. This is not really Adam’s forte either, but he did a way better job than Isaac. Really, how hard can it be to sweep a floor? Everything was ready when the first guests arrived. Simon was still sleeping, but he woke up pretty quickly and was in a good mood right away.

There were lots of kids at the party of all different age ranges. It was a busy and noisy time, but fun was had by all.

Once the party was over it was time to get ready for the kids to go out trick or treating. Here is the thing about Pittsburg, they set the trick or treating hours. The kids can only be out between 5:30 and 7:30. Natasha was pretty unimpressed upon learning about this. She was pretty sure she was going to be out much later than 7:30. In some suburbs, they set the day as well. So in one area, they had their Halloween on Thursday night. Who knew!

Simon was supposed to be the Hulk, but he would not put his costume back on. He had it on this morning, but twice in one day was too much. We had bought him a Superman t-shirt as part of his birthday present and he had that on. Suz threw a cape on him and a spiderman hat (which didn’t last) and he was good to go. Claire did not want to go out, she hates getting dressed up as it is too much work - oh to be 6. Finally everyone was ready, but Claire would no get in the group picture:

I was staying back to hand out the candy and relax with the dogs. They were not expecting too many kids, so it was going to be pretty relaxing. As it turned out, it was not overly relaxing. Every time someone was on the stairs, Bowser started barking his face off and charging at the door. I had to get the candy and stand outside to keep the little maniac in the house. They only got about 20 kids, so I didn’t have to do that very often.

Claire made it till about 7 and then she came back with Adam. The others got back at 7:40. Suzanne got a quick supper together for the little ones and Adam and Blake ran out to get some Thai food for the rest of us from Noodlehead. Now Suz and I had ordered our food with only a spice level of 1 (spice levels are 1 to 5) and they were much more spicy than we thought a 1 should be. I could get mine down, but it was way too much for Suz. We had ordered Isaac’s with no spice, so I guess we should have done that for ours as well. Ah well, live and learn.

Tash and Blake stayed up late and watched American Horror Story, but the rest of us called it a night.
