Sonya’s Blog - Day 118 - October 18th - Cape Cod

There is a bit of a cold front on the East Coast right now and today is going to be significantly chillier, only a high of 9. We decided to take a drive up the peninsula and explore Cape Cod. We thought we would go straight to the tip and start in Province Town and then work our way down the Peninsula. It was a two hour drive to Province Town so we were hoping that it would be a little warmer by the time we got there.

There is only one main highway to Provincetown and it was pretty slow going in parts. There are some secondary roads, but a lot of them do not connect up, they just dead end because they were built for homes or cottages. So you are pretty much stuck on the main highway and you have to go with the flow of traffic. It took us much longer than 2 hours to get to Provincetown. The streets were very narrow in Provincetown, but we managed to find parking and continue on our way walking. Commercial Street is the place to explore and it leads right to the beach. There are several quaint boutique shops along Commercial Street and, even though it was very cold, it was very busy. Natasha and I found a fun little boutique that we apparently spent far too much time in:) We had lots of fun trying stuff on and we bought some stuff, well I bought quite a bit and Natasha bought a fedora. The boys had spent their time walking up and down Commercial Street and they went to the beach. Kizmet was allowed on the beach and she had fun running around.

After we were done in the shop we headed over to The Squealing Pig for lunch, as the lady at the shop recommended it. We had brought a packed lunch, but it was just too chilly out so we headed over to the pub. It is just a tiny little pub and it was packed. We got there just in time though because a table was just about to leave. The next people that showed up had a 45 minute wait ahead of them. It was an oyster bar and I had some oysters and they were fabulous. Everyone else enjoyed their meals and it was warm and cozy in the pub.

We ventured back outside after our meal, just in time for a few snowflakes to start falling. It was nothing drastic, but still a little shocking. We were told to check out the library so we headed over there. We went up to the top floor and looked down and there is a ship in the library:

It is a half scale model of a fishing schooner called the Rose Dorothea and it had won the Lipton Cup in 1907 during the Old Home Week Celebration in the fisherman’s race. The model is a tribute to the men who won the race, but also to the fisherman and the tradition of shipbuilding in New England.

We walked down Commercial Street some more and explored a few more stops and bought a few more things. We also got some cheesy pictures:

We then went and got a picture in front of the Pilgrim Monument, as Provincetown Harbour was the original landing place of the Mayflower. They stayed in the Provincetown Harbour for about 6 weeks while they explored the Cape Cod area. They eventually decided to settle in Plymouth and moved the Mayflower there so they could build houses.

It was getting pretty late by this point and the skys were getting dark due to the heavy clouds that had blown in. By the time we got back to the truck and started heading back, the sleet was coming down pretty hard. We wanted to explore Brewster and possibly one other town, but it didn’t work out. The traffic was terrible on the way out and we did 5 KM/hour for a very long time. It finally cleared up a bit and we made better time, but it was dark by this time and we just headed back to the campsite.

We had a late supper when we got back and then got ready for bed. It may get down to -3 tonight so we made sure we were all cozed in.
