Sonya’s Blog - Day 116 - October 16th - Traveling to the Boston Area and Exploring Plymouth
Today was a moving day, we are leaving Old Orchard Beach and traveling to the Cape Cod/Boston KOA. I want to make sure that we are not traveling anywhere near Boston with the RV because that would be crazy. Boston was one of the cities we visited on our honeymoon and it was crazy driving around, and that was 1998. I am sure it has not improved. There is a highway that goes around the heavily populated areas, so we will stick to that road. It is more KM’s driving, however, according to our GPS it will only take a few minutes longer than the more direct route. We will be taking that route, it will be far less stressful.
We did have to get some stuff accomplished before we could hit the road. We had run out of propane, mostly because Blake left the bbq on all night and we have been using the heat more. Blake wanted to get them filled up before we left and he also had to fill up the truck. We also had a few small repairs to do. We were hoping to leave by 10, but didn’t get out until 11. It was about a 2 1/2 to 3 hour drive, so not too bad.
The drive was smooth going and very uneventful, just the way we like them to go. We arrived at our new campsite just after 2, so not so bad. Once we were all checked in and set up it was about 3:30 and then we had to figure out what to do. It was quite a nice fall day and Isaac was so excited about the mini-golf and the camp K-9 for Kizmet. Blake played a game of mini-golf with Isaac and enquired at the office about things to do close to the campground. They recommended that we go to Plymouth, which is where Plymouth Rock is located.

Off we went to Plymouth, but we didn’t get there until 5 PM, which was unfortunate. We headed to the historic area to check out the Mayflower II and Plymouth Rock. The kids discovered a store that sold a lot of Harry Potter stuff on our way towards the Mayflower II so they popped in there for a look see. There was lots of cool stuff in there and we had fun looking at all the Harry Potter items.
Onto the Mayflower II. This ship is an exact duplicate of the original Mayflower. It is a Museum, but it was closed for the season. We were only able to see the ship from the outside. We did get a good picture of the four of us as someone stopped and took one for us:
We then moved onto Plymouth Rock to get a look at that. Legend has it that the new Pilgrims stepped onto this rock when they entered the New World. This is probably not accurate as it is not mentioned in any writings from the Pilgrims of that period and the Mayflower originally landed closer to Province Town at the tip of the Cape Cod Peninsula. The rock really had no relevance until more than 100 years later when an elder in the church declared that it could not be touched as it was the landing site of the Mayflower. There is a very large portico over the rock and the rock is now at sea level with 1620 stamped into it (the year the Mayflower landed in America). It is not as large as it once was as many pieces of the rock are scattered around the States and it has been moved around several times.

The kids had a little history lesson about the first immigrants to America, their journey and establishing Plymouth.
It was starting to get dark so we headed back to the truck. We had to stop at the grocery store to stock up on supplies and then back to the campsite. We had a late supper and then called it a night.
