Sonya's Blog - Day 110 - October 10th - Isaac's 12th Birthday!!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ISAAC!!!! His last year as a kid! What am I going to do? Isaac set his alarm for 7:10 AM because that is what time he was born at. He got up and was so excited to see all the gifts on the couch for him. It was pretty chilly in the RV, so Blake turned on the heat and Isaac climbed into bed and I read some more Tom Sawyer to him. Blake was cooking up some crepes for Isaac's requested Birthday breakfast. I read Isaac chapters 2 and 3 and then it was time to get up because Blake needed my help. I reluctantly dragged myself out of bed as it was significantly warmer in my bed than out in the kitchen area. Birthday Breakfasts are an important tradition in our family so I sucked it up and got up. I helped out and then we took a little break so that Isaac could open his presents. He wanted to open them before breakfast, which was fine by us. He was very happy with all his gifts and so excited to get Star Wars X-Wing Fantasy Flight and the expansion pack Imperial Aces (from his Nana) because he has been waiting sooooo looooong for that (like, if I could guess probably 4 months - could be 5). Regardless, Isaac was super excited. We also gave him Volume 1 of Injustice ( a Comic Book collection for those of you not in the know). Natasha gave him snack (trail mix from Costco that is his favourite and he just calls it snack because that's what he called it when he was younger) and The Guinness World Book of Records - Gamers Edition. Kizmet gave him some Star Wars headphones (she is a clever shopper). His Grandparents gave him a new charger for his iphone (he left one in a cabin in Cape Breton) and a Canadiens Goalie Mask Night Light.

We then sat down to a super yummy Birthday Breakfast! We all enjoyed it and stuffed our faces. Blake made plain crepes, sausage and cheese and plain cheese. The Freezer Strawberry Jam that Pierre gave us was really good on the cheese crepes. We all enjoy the crepes and Blake does a good job making them.

Blake and Isaac decided to play some video games and to set up the new Star Wars game (it is not a video game, more like a board game). I went and had my shower and Natasha cuddled up in her room and read her book. At about 11:30 it was time to head out to go bowling so that we would have enough time to get that done before the movie at 4:15. Our GPS had a hard time finding Bowlerama, but we finally succeeded. We got all set up and headed over to our lane and discovered it was Candlestick Bowling. None of us had ever tried Candlestick Bowling before because they don't have it out west. The pins are really skinny (like candles) and there are 10 of them, but you use a 5 bin bowling ball. The pins are hard to knock down because they are so think and it is also hard to see how many you have knocked down because they are right behind each other. The pins do not clean up after every play, you just push the button after your 3 balls, so sometimes you can get a gutter ball and knock down pins if the knocked down pins hang over the gutter. Well I am not very good at candlestick bowling as it turns out. I was the first to get a strike, but the rest of my game was not so hot (I had a few rounds with just 2 points). We played two full games and we all did much better on our second game than our first. We had a lot of fun, plus halfway through our first game they dimmed the lights and it was glow bowling - oooooh!

We went back to the RV and walked Kizmet and had some lunch. I made little mini pizza's with wraps for the kids and Blake. We are trying to use up some of our food in our fridge because we head to the States tomorrow and you never know what they are going to do at the border. The kids loved the little pizza's I made for them and I was just making it up on the spot, so that was huge bonus. Blake and Isaac continued to play the Star Wars game while they had their lunch, I cleaned up the breakfast dishes and Natasha continued on with her reading.

It was time to go to the movie. We gave Kizmet a good walk and then took off for the movie. Somehow Isaac had missed his Auntie Amber's birthday call, I must not have the ringer up very high on my cell phone. He called her back while we were driving to the theatre and had a nice chat with her. She left him a great message with her and Uncle Dan singing a melodious rendition of Happy Birthday which was enjoyed by all! Natasha and Blake got some popcorn while Isaac was finishing up his call. Once we were all set up we went into the theatre. There were not too many people in the theatre, but The Scorch Trials was released in September so that is not too surprising. We got some good seats and waited for the movie to start. The Scorch Trials is the second movie in The Maze Runner series, based on the second boo by the same name. We saw The Maze Runner and it was okay. They changed some stuff from the book in the first movie so it will be interesting to see what they do with this one. Natasha is nervous because she loved the books and her friend told her the movie was terrible. Isaac's friend told him it was great, but I don't think he read the book, so that can make a difference. We have all read the book so we shall see.

The movie was okay, they really didn't follow the book very closely and took off in their own direction for a lot of the movie and for the ending. Not really sure where they are going to go now because it is a completely different ending than in the book. The book had a lot of action so that was good. Natasha hated it because it was too different from the book for her. Isaac thought it was good, although he admitted it was unfortunate they changed so many things. As long as he enjoyed it, it was for his birthday after all.

Back to the RV we went to cook up some supper. Isaac wanted ribs for supper and I had to get those going with the potatoes. I started that and Blake ran out to fill up the truck so that we are all set to leave in the morning. Things went quickly as we had bought pre-prepped ribs. When Blake got back things were almost ready. Supper was good and Isaac enjoyed his birthday dinner. He then called back his Auntie Tanya and Uncle Steve as he had missed their call because my phone was still off from the theatre. We got the cake all ready with the candles and sang him Happy Birthday when he was ready. We watched an episode of Corner Gas while we were enjoying cake.

Isaac was a sleepy boy after his big day. He got into bed and had enjoyed his birthday. He would have liked to have had some friends around, but we did the best we could. We are up early tomorrow to drive to Old Orchard Beach in Maine and it is about a 7 hour drive. We start our 6 month stint in the States tomorrow, should be interesting. We are trying to figure out our cell phone coverage and we may have a new number in a couple of days. It is too expensive to add US coverage onto our Bell plan and the data they allow you is terrible. US plans are really cheap and there are lots of companies and many of them have unlimited data, no contract and calls to Canada for like $45 per month. We told Bell that their plans were terrible and we would be looking at US companies for the 6 months we are there. We will probably end up with a new cell number, but that's okay. We will have our phone off for a couple days while we figure out what we need to do. It will be a pain, but worth it in the long run.
