Black Sand And Fisheries
The Food Fishery opened on this day, a ten day period in which anyone can go out and fish for cod, the daily allowance being either 5 per person or 15 per boat, depending on how many people there are out in one boat. Dad wanted to join in so the plan was to make the hour drive out to Blackhead to see what was up. The drive was long and I almost finished my second book on the way there (Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children). Us girls in Maureen’s car went straight to Ochre Cove, where the fishermen dock, because we had gotten out late but the boys decided to stop at Peter’s parents house first. We had a hard time getting a hold of them since there was very little cell service but we finally managed a communication of sorts and decided to explore the shoreline while we waited for them. I came across a little hidden rocky beach over the breakwater and we got some cool pictures there before the boys showed up. Then
we walked up and down the wharf, came across a seal skin drying on a rock, and looking for fishermen, but most everybody had already come back in with their daily quota so we didn’t stay long. The next stop was Northern Sands Beach, one of the only sand beaches on the island. It was actually black sand and was very pretty but I spent a lot of the time there running around away from the wasps that seemed to infest the sand. It was awesome, I absolutely adore wasps. Then we all headed out to Peter’s parents house to say hello before taking the drive back into town. They were very sweet. Peter’s dad was out in the back doing word the entire time and when Dad went to help with the mowing, he was closely supervised the entire time. At one point Maddi, Isaac, Dad
and I went out into the back to pick raspberries, but there weren’t all that many ripe ones on the bushes and Gigi quite enjoys raspberries so she was eating them as we went along also. Peter’s mother served us some scrumptious soup and homemade chocolate cake for lunch. Their house was very seventies style and both my parents said it was like stepping into the past. They even had an old TV with dials and an antenna. That was a nice stop before getting back on the. Back at the house, Madeleine had to set out for her
shift at DQ, 5:00pm to 1:00am (no thanks) and Mum and Dad went out with Maureen and Peter to George Street to get Screeched In and become honorary Newfoundlanders, with kissing the cod and drinking the screech and stuff. When they got back, Maureen made sautéed scallops, pork loin and salads for supper, which was very good. I went to go read while the adults played the traditional Newfoundland game of cards, 120’s, which they have yet to teach me. I’m personally offended by this. Peace out m8s.
